Rahway was the original settlement area for the Lenni Lenape Native Americans and was named after the local tribal chief, Rahwack. It became a European settlement in the 17th century.
The most noted place in the City of Rahway is of course the Rahway River. It is a 48-kilometer long river with its upper reaches surrounded by parks and the mouth utilized as industrial channel. It is also the source of drinking water for Rahway residents and is home to over 6,000 trout.

The East Jersey State Prison (formerly Rahway State Prison) made an appearance at the start of the movie Ocean's Eleven. It was where Clooney was supposedly incarcerated.
