Originally coined the “Million Women’s March,” the name has changed to the Women’s March on Washington. Million Women’s March was already taken by an African American’s women’s march that occurred in 1997. The current Women’s March is a grassroots level rally that aims to “work peacefully while recognizing there is not true peace without justice and equity for all. HEAR OUR VOICE.”

Anyone supporting women’s rights is welcome to attend, and efforts have extended to include supporters from Canada, Mexico and worldwide.

Idea for the March and the Diversity of Supporters

The idea for the march began as an idea that went viral on social media. Apparently a Hawaiian grandmother invited 40 of her friends to march on Washington with her. Friends invited friends and the idea spread rapidly after a Facebook Group called Pantsuit Nation saw the post.

At first, organizers for the march were all white women, but organizers expanded to include three prominent women of color with activist and organizer experience. Organizers have openly committed to the six principles of Nonviolence espoused by Martin Luther King, Jr.

One of the organizers gave a press statement that the march “represents women and people who identify as women, of all backgrounds, races, religions, ages and abilities.”

Not a Protest, but a March or Rally

Organizers are promoting the march as a rally rather than a protest. It’s not an anti-Trump demonstration but instead is an affirmative message for the new administration to support women’s rights as human rights.

As part of a global movement for women’s rights, the Canadian Delegation for the Women’ March will be present and promotes the march for everyone, including people for all religious communities, immigrants, People of Color, and Women & Girls & Femmes & GNC, to name a few.
