The History of South by Southwest
SXSW got its start in 1986 when organizers of the New Music Seminar in New York City initiated talks with Roland Swenson, of the Austin Chronicle, exploring the possibility of a New Music Seminar Southwest in the Texas capitol. The event never happened, but the discussions planted the seed for South by Southwest, as Swenson was convinced that the city was a perfect place for live music festival, given its reputation as a hotbed for new musical talent, with artists as diverse as Janis Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Lyle Lovett honing their craft there before attaining stardom.
The organizers chose the name South by Southwest as a tribute to and a play on the movie North by Northwest, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. They expected about 150 people the first year, but had more than 700 show up and the festival has grown in size ever since. Some famous artists who helped give credibility to the festival in its early years include Johnny Cash, John Mayer, Michelle Shocked and the pop trio Hanson. The festival’s film component was added in 1994 and a comedy division was introduced in 2008.
South by Southwest 2017
This year’s festival is scheduled for March 10-19. The festival has booked hundreds of musicians from around the globe, from Argentina to Australia, from France and Spain to Canada and, of course, the United States. Jesse Colin Young, famous for his hit single “Get Together,” recorded in 1969, has signed on. CJ Fly, founding member of the rap group Pro Era, will be there, as will local favorite singer-songwriter Lincoln Durham. But more than anything, SXSW is a platform for upcoming musical acts. You’ll have the chance to hear acts as diverse as Qawalistan, from Pakistan; Riel, from Buenos Aires; River Whyless, from Asheville, North Carolina; and The Spook School, from Scotland.
Preparing for SXSW
To attend SXSW, you need to determine which badge is best for you and register to attend. The festival offers four different badges: individual badges for music, film and interactive; and a platinum badge, which allows you access to everything SXSW has to offer, including the comedy events. Entry to all events is by badge, not by ticket. The current ticket prices range from $1,225 to $1,550 (for the platinum badge), but will increase to $1,325 to $1,650 after February 10.
Though you’ll be in Texas, it’s still important to remember that it’s March and the temperatures in Austin can be chilly. Festival organizers recommend layers, so that you can add keep more clothes on to fend of cold weather, but cool down if it gets hot. Backpacks are allowed and encouraged. Make certain you bring comfortable shoes, too. You’ll want to walk around Austin and you don’t want blisters.
