Emerald green, shamrocks and leprechauns with pots of gold come to mind when you think about St. Patrick’s Day. And for those who like to party hearty, you may dream about green beer or swilling shots of Irish whiskey.
Cities across the nation plan festive parades in celebration. There’s even a website called Niche that rates the best St. Patrick’s Day cities based on the following criteria:
- Access to Bars grade
- St. Patrick’s Day Facebook Hype
- Percentage of Irish in the city
- How many years the city has had a St. Patrick’s Day parade
Among the top 10 that made the rank, Philadelphia (ranked number 5) was the earliest city to establish a St. Patrick’s Day parade, back in 1771. Most of the cities earned A+ Bar Access ratings, which aligns with the fact that the Irish are famous for hearty drinking.
Boston made number 2 on the list and began its St. Paddy’s Day parades in 1737. It looks like Pittsburgh beat Boston claiming the top rank because of its Facebook Hype, which was 18 percent for Boston compared to 136 percent for Pittsburgh.
The top 10 cities for St. Patrick’s Day Parades, in order of ranking include:
- Pittsburgh, PA
- Boston, PA
- Davenport, IA
- Buffalo, NY
- Philadelphia, PA
- Savannah, GA
- Kansas City, MO
- Cleveland, OH
