Governors Ball and Panorama Highlight Big Apple’s Summer Music Offerings

There’s good news for music lovers in New York City. The Governors Ball will be back for its seventh year, and upstart Panorama, also known as Coachella East, will return for its second year. Like last year, both festivals will be held at Randall”s Island Park. The Governors Ball opens the summer on June 2-4 and Panorama runs July 28-30. You can buy single day or full festival passes at Panorama tickets or Governors Ball tickets.

Both festivals have amazing lineups and promise to be great fun. But you don’t want to put a damper on the festivities by trying to handle everything yourself—finding the venue, locating parking, and getting home after a long day of food, fun and music. There’s a better way to enjoy these festivals—in a charter bus from Relax with friends and family while we handle all the details.

The Governors Ball

Gov Ball offers the world’s top Indie rock, alternative rock, hip-hop and electronic artists. This year’s lineup features more than 60 performers, including Chance the Rapper, Wu-Tang Clan, Stormzy, Cage The Elephant and Tool. Organizers will again have food trucks and stands from many popular New York City eateries, as well as photo booths, lawn games and ping pong. Among the restaurants at the festival will be Mighty Quinn’s BBQ, the MomoFuku Milk Bar, Ramen Burger, Southernmost Falafel, Coolhaus Ice Cream, Hippie Dips and Asia Dog. Past headliners have included Beck, Fiona Apple, Kanye West, Kings of Leon, The Killers and the Avett Brothers.

Gates open at 11:45 am every day and attendees must start leaving at 11 pm. There is no re-entry into the festival once you leave. The festival goes forward, rain or shine, so rain gear, umbrellas, sunglasses and sunscreen are advised. The Governors Ball is a smoke-free environment—that includes e-cigs. Soft-sided coolers are okay, but picnic baskets, hard back chairs and lawn furniture are not allowed. You can purchase alcohol at the festival, but you can’t bring your own. You’re there to listen to professional musicians, so don’t bring an instrument with you. Pets are not allowed, except for service animals. For a complete list of what you should and what you can’t bring, visit the Governors Ball FAQ page.

Panorama, promoted by Goldenvoice, who also promote Coachella, advertises a broader musical palette, including rock, alternative rock, Indie, hip-hop, R & B, EDM, funk and Americana. Nine Inch Nails will be there this year, along with Dhani Harrison, son of the former Beatle. A Tribe Called Quest, Mister Saturday Night, Angel Olsen, Tame Impala and Alt-J will also be among the nearly 50 acts performing at Panorama. There’s also The Lab, a display of artists exclusively from New York City. Panorama also features food from NYC favorites, such as Loosie Rouge, Oddfellows Ice Cream, The Beatrice Inn and Roberta’s. The inaugural Panorama, in 2016, featured Arcade Fire, the Alabama Shakes, Major Lazer, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Kendrick Lamar, Sufjan Stevens, Flosstradamus, Grace Potter and Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats.

Panorama welcomes attendees of any age—tots 2 and under get in free. The show goes on rain or shine, with gates opening at noon every day. Entrants will receive a wristband that must be activated before entering the festival grounds. You can bring in backpacks and purses, but they have to be smaller than 20x15x9. Blankets, bug spray, hats, hula hoops and empty camelbacks are also permitted. No aerosol containers are allowed and you can’t bring in your own alcoholic beverages. No pets, other than service animals, are allowed through the gates. You must purchase all food and beverages onsite, and can’t bring in chairs or coolers.
