Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), also known generically as autism, is a brain disorder affecting more than one out of every 68 children in America. Studies show that the condition is five times more common in boys than girls, and typically manifests between the ages of 18 months and three years. The condition can cost parents an estimated $60,000 a year, and research by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control shows that the number of diagnoses has increased tenfold in the last half century.
Medical professionals and scientists say there is currently no known cure for autism. A grassroots organization, Autism Speaks, wants to do something about that, and you can help.
Autism Speaks sponsors walks across the country, with participants raising dollars through pledges. The money raised then goes toward research to understand the nature and causes of the condition, as well as potential treatment and cure.
On Saturday, April 2, 2016, organizers expect more than 50,000 people to convene in Pasadena for the city’s 14th annual Autism Speaks Walk Los Angeles. Since its inception, the walk has raised more than $10 million and provided funding for services to more than 30,000 families with autistic children. The same day, Autism Speaks Louisiana will sponsor a walk starting at the University
of New Orleans.
There are walks from coast to coast in the next few months, from Hartford, Connecticut to Chicago to Pittsburgh, Fort Lauderdale and Seattle. To learn more, go to the Autism Speaks Walk website.
Walkers in all Autism Speaks events are encouraged to wear light blue as a show of solidarity in the fight to combat this tragic illness. You can participate individually or as part of a team. Individuals who raise more than $150 in pledges will receive a commemorative tee shirt on walk day.
