Paying Tribute to American Labor and Prosperity

The first Monday in September is set aside every year to acknowledge the contributions that the labor movement and workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of the nation. The idea for the holiday arose in the late 1800s, as trade and labor unions grew in strength and popularity. The first Labor Day parade was held in New York City’s Union Square in 1882 and Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day a holiday in 1887. The U.S. Congress officially made it a national holiday in 1894.

Interestingly, at the time the first Labor Day was proposed, organizers laid out specific guidelines for the celebration of the holiday, which was to include a parade, a festival for workers and their families and speeches by prominent individuals within the labor movement. In 1909, the American Federation of Labor adopted the Sunday of Labor Day weekend as “Labor Sunday” and proposed activities devoted to the “spiritual and educational” aspects of the Labor movement.

The Evolution of Labor Day

Over the years, the Labor Day weekend has focused less on the labor movement, however, and more on other cultural events, from the end of summer to the kickoff of fall sports, including high school, college and professional football. Though there will be a few games the week before, many great college football clashes are set for the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, including Alabama vs. Florida State, Michigan vs. Florida, Texas A&M vs. UCLA and West Virginia vs. Virginia Tech. The Labor Day weekend is the halfway point in the U.S. Open tennis championships at Flushing Meadows, and it’s also a big weekend for motor-heads, with the Southern 500 NASCAR event at Darlington, South Carolina and the National Hot Rod Association’s NHRA U.S. Nationals drag races in Indianapolis.

Don’t Drink and Drive Over the Labor Day Weekend

It’s well-known that many people look at the Labor Day weekend as the last party of the summer. Law enforcement officials across the country anticipate significantly higher rates of drinking and driving, and customarily set up task forces and sobriety checks along popular roadways. The risks can be high, even if it seems like you’ve had a small quantity of alcohol. The easiest way to avoid a DUI/DWI is not to get behind the wheel—with a charter bus rental from, you can have as many beers as you want without worrying about how you’ll get home.
