The Ultra Music Festival
Named in honor of the 1997 classic album Ultra, by the British electronic super-group Depeche Mode, the annual outdoor festival has been staged in Miami every March since 1999. Since 2007, the event has gone global, with companion festivals staged in Ibiza, Spain since 2007 and now in 13 other countries, including Argentina, Chile, Thailand, Korea and Japan.
Until 2007, founders Alex Omes and Russell Faibisch organized a single day event. In 2007, the festival expanded to two full days and since 2011, it’s been a three day affair. Over the years, the festival has drawn many of the biggest names in electronic dance music, from DJ Baby Anne and Rabbit in the Moon to Paul Oakenfold, Josh Wink and Erick Morillo. In recent years, the festival has seen increased involvement from crossover artists and live performers, including the Black-Eyed Peas, Kraftwerk, Snoop Dogg and even a surprise performance from Madonna in 2012.
In 2015, Justin Bieber and Sean Combs made appearances. That same year, organizers opened a new stage called “Resistance,” focusing on progressive house, deep house and techno performers such as Maceo Plex, Guy Gerber, Tale of Us and Apollonia. In a recent post on www.noiseprn.com, the premier website for EDM, it was reported earlier this month that organizers are amping up this year’s Resistance lineup, bringing in more underground DJs to the Arcadia stage, including Hot Since 82, Dosem, Dubfire, Matador, Eats Everything, Waff, Hector and Jamie Jones.
Ultra won a DJ Mag reader’s poll as the “world’s best festival” in 2016, with an estimated 14 million people worldwide catching a live streaming in 2015. The festival has also won multiple Best Dance Event and Best Music Event awards from the International Dance Music Association.
Some Things to Know Before You Go
There are a couple of things to be aware of, particularly if you are not a local. Miami is very hot and humid in March, so you’ll want to make certain you dress appropriately. Wear comfortable clothing and make certain you have shoes that won’t give you blisters from hours of dancing. There will be free water at the festival from multiple water stations, but you can’t bring your own water bottle into the event. You must purchase either a water bottle or hydration pack.
In addition, there are a number of items that may not be brought into the festival, most notably backpacks not made of clear material. For a complete list, see the list of banned items.
