Originally the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the organization is the largest breast cancer non-profit in the country. Founded in Dallas,Texas in 1982, Komen has raised almost one and a half billion dollars through partnerships in more than 50 countries around the world. The organization was started by Norma Goodman Brinker, the younger sister of Susan Goodman Komen, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 33 and died of the disease three years later.
The entity’s signature event has long been the “Race for the Cure,®” the world’s largest breast cancer fundraising event. The Race for the Cure typically involves a 5K road race, as well as fitness walks. The first Race for the Cure was held in Dallas in 1983, with approximately 800 participants. The annual races, now numbering more than 130, currently draw nearly two million participants and involve over 100,000 volunteers. In addition to Laugh for the Cure, other events tied to Komen include the Bowl for the Cure, Marathon for the Cure, and a three day walk.
Komen’s philosophy involves promoting more than cancer research. The organization emphasizes self-awareness and universal mammography screening as important tools in the fight against breast cancer.
