The Easy Way to Listen to the Music

Rolling Stone magazine has dubbed it as one of the great moments that changed rock and roll.” GQ lists it among the top live music festivals every year. It’s been called “the new Woodstock.” Hey, 80,000 fans can’t be wrong, can they? It’s the Bonnaroo Music Festival, where you’ll find the real melting pot of music, from indie and classic rock to bluegrass, from hip hop and jazz to American, reggae, gospel and world music.

The festival’s name, Creole slang for “a really good time,” was memorialized by New Orleans legend Dr. John in the title of his 1974 LP Desitively Bonnaroo. The festival’s been held in Manchester, Tennessee every year since 2002, and has seen nearly anybody who’s anybody in the music industry, from Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney to Bob Dylan, Phish, James Brown, Mumford & Sons, The Police and a reunion from Buffalo Springfield. It’s all set for June 8-11, and this year’s lineup includes U2, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, among nearly 100 musical acts. There’ll also be a great lineup of standup comedians.

Preparing for Bonnaroo

This year’s festival starts on Thursday, June 8, but the general admissions campgrounds will open on Wednesday, June 7, at 8 pm. The festival ends on Sunday, June 11, but campers don’t have to vacate the premises until noon on Monday, June 12. Bonnaroo is located about halfway between Nashville and Chattanooga on a 530 acre farm owned by the festival’s organizers. The festival also leases another 250 acres for parking and additional camping. You can leave and come back in to the Main Venue as often as you want to, so it’s no problem to get yourself there by charter bus.

Here are some things you don’t want to be without at Bonnaroo—

  • Rain gear, including mud boots—The festival goes on, rain or shine. If it rains, you’ll have a lot more fun if you have something to protect you from the weather.
  • Sun protection—A hat or a bandanna to keep from scorching your scalp, as well as some sunscreen with a high SPF rating. You’ll also want at least one pair of shades…might be a good idea to bring a few, as they can get legs.
  • Clothes for warm and cool weather—shorts and tee shirts are the norm, but a hoodie is a good idea, as well as an extra pair of shoes
  • Bug spray—It’s early in the summer, but there can still be lots of pests

There’s no minimum age requirement to get into Bonnaroo, but anyone over the age of 12 must have a ticket.

You can bring a point and shoot camera, but nothing with a detachable lens that’s longer than two inches.
