From its trademark character balloons to the marching bands, from floats to Broadway musical songs to other performances, the parade speaks to the heart of America and reminds us of all for which we have to thankful. You’ve seen in on TV—why not catch it live? There’s nothing that can compare to the festive holiday mood along the streets of Manhattan.

Parade officials estimate that there can be as many as 3.5 million parade watchers on the streets of New York on Thanksgiving morning. You don’t want to try to navigate traffic when there’s a crowd that big! With a charter bus rental from BusRental.com, you can relax with friends and family while we take care of everything.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade—A National Treasure

Though the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is not the oldest in America—that crown goes to the Philadelphia event—it’s certainly the most well-known. For the first three years of its history, the parade included floats, bands and live animals from the Central Park Zoo. In 1927, Macy’s worked with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company to produce the first animal-shaped balloons, which permanently replaced the live animals. Felix the Cat made his debut in 1931, Mickey Mouse first appeared in 1934 and Uncle Sam floated onto the scene in 1938. The following years have seen a veritable “who’s who” of famous cartoon and comic strip characters, including Pinocchio (1939), Superman (1940), Popeye (1957), Bullwinkle J. Moose (1961), Snoopy (1968), Kermit the Frog (1977), Bugs Bunny (1989), The Cat in the Hat (1994), SpongeBob SquarePants (2004), Papa Smurf (2012) and Thomas the Tank Engine (2014).

In 1990, Macy’s introduced the concept of a “falloon,” combining a float and a balloon. Popular falloons include Humpty Dumpty, The Grinch and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Many of the floats return year after year, but there are also new floats introduced with every parade. Last year saw the Krazy Glue Fun House, the Hawaiian Aloha Spirit and the Sino-American Friend Association Chengdu floats added to the parade.

In addition, there are performers who have become a regular part of the tradition of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade:

  • The Radio City Music Hall Rockettes have performed their precision dance routines every year since 1957
  • High school cheerleaders and dancers chosen by the National Cheerleaders Association perform at a number of locations along the parade route
  • Cast members from popular Broadway musicals, including School of Rock (2015), The Color Purple (2016), Annie (2012), A Chorus Line (2006), Miss Saigon (1991) and Brigadoon (1980).
  • Popular entertainers, such as Tony Bennett (2016), Mariah Carey (2015), Daniel Radcliffe (2011), Julie Andrews (2006) and the Beach Boys (2005).
